Boomma: A Warm and Playful Handwritten Font for Branding

There’s a moment in every branding project where you open a blank brand board and feel the weight of possibility. That’s when I first tested Boomma—a font that immediately felt like a friend. As an experienced brand designer, I’ve worked on countless logos, packaging, and social media layouts, but Boomma stood out with its charm and approachability.

The First Impressions

I was working on a boutique identity project for a local café that wanted to feel cozy and inviting. The client had a clear vision: warm, friendly, and a little bit whimsical. Boomma fit perfectly into that vibe. Its rounded shapes and soft strokes reminded me of handwritten notes from childhood—something that feels personal and genuine.

At first glance, Boomma has a playful personality that’s hard to ignore. It’s not overly ornate or complicated, which makes it versatile for different design applications. Whether I was sketching a logo concept or placing it on a packaging mockup, Boomma brought a sense of warmth that aligned with the client’s brand voice.

Testing in Real Projects

I used Boomma across multiple design assets, including a logo draft, business cards, website headers, and social media graphics. One of my favorite uses was on a café menu mockup. The font’s soft curves and gentle transitions made the text feel like it was hand-written by a barista who cared about their craft. It added a human touch that digital fonts often lack.

On a website header, Boomma worked well as a headline font. Its readability at larger sizes made it ideal for grabbing attention without overwhelming the viewer. However, I noticed that at smaller sizes, such as on a business card, the font could become slightly less legible. This is something to consider if you’re planning to use it in very small print applications.

Another test was on a social media layout for the café’s Instagram page. Boomma looked great in both promotional posts and story text. Its casual feel complemented the brand’s personality, making the content feel more relatable and authentic.

Font Pairing and Design Applications

Boomma isn’t just a standalone font—it pairs beautifully with other typefaces to create balance. In one project, I paired it with a clean sans serif font for body text, allowing Boomma to shine as the headline and accent font. This contrast helped highlight key messages while maintaining visual harmony.

For packaging design, Boomma was perfect for product labels and signage. Its friendly tone made it ideal for a handmade shop or a creative studio looking to convey a sense of artistry and care. I also found it useful in editorial design, where it added a personal touch to magazine covers and flyers.

However, Boomma may not be the best choice for long body text or formal corporate use. Its playful nature can sometimes make it feel too informal for certain contexts. If you’re designing for a professional setting, it’s worth considering how the font aligns with your brand’s tone and audience expectations.

Strengths and Limitations

Boomma excels as a display font, especially in short phrases, logos, and social media graphics. Its charm lies in its ability to convey warmth and friendliness without being over the top. It’s also a great option for creating a cohesive brand identity that feels approachable and memorable.

That said, there are a few limitations to keep in mind. At smaller sizes, the soft strokes can make the text less legible. Additionally, while Boomma offers several styles and alternates, it doesn’t have the extensive ligatures or swashes of some premium script fonts. This means it might not be suitable for projects requiring intricate typography.

Practical Tips for Using Boomma

If you’re planning to use Boomma in a real client project, I recommend testing it in different contexts before finalizing your design. Print a physical mockup to see how it looks at various sizes and in different lighting conditions. Also, check the font’s commercial licensing to ensure it’s appropriate for your intended use, whether it’s for packaging, websites, or print-on-demand products.

When pairing Boomma with other fonts, experiment with contrasting styles to create visual interest. A modern sans serif font can provide a strong contrast, while a serif font can add elegance and sophistication. Don’t be afraid to mix and match to find the perfect balance for your brand.

Finally, remember that typography is more than just choosing a font—it’s about how it enhances your brand’s message. Boomma brings a unique personality to any design, but it’s up to you to use it thoughtfully and intentionally.
